Hey everyone! Zach Who Watches Movies here to help you
prepare for the release of this weekend’s mega blockbuster, Jurassic World.
It's no secret that the original Jurassic Park is my all-time favorite movie
and that I find it to be a perfect film (more on that later in the week) so my
excitement is through the roof for this weekend. That is why I have compiled
this list of five movies for you, to help you get up to speed with the people
who made this all possible (minus Chris Pratt, everyone knows who he is now). I
have seen each of these and would highly recommend them to anyone if you
haven't seen them. They are as follows:
Director Colin Trevorrow's Safety Not Guaranteed:
Unfortunately this movie is no longer streaming on Netflix
but if you haven't seen it it's more than worth the few dollars to rent. The
flick is a totally original little indie about an eccentric guy who puts an ad
in the paper looking for a companion to travel through time with. It is
Trevorrow's sole directing credit aside from this weekend’s movie and is to
credit for him getting the job. Watching the film you will find yourself
feeling much more comfortable with him behind the camera. He is wonderful at bringing
strong, compelling characters to the screen while being sure not to overshadow
them with the more sci-fi aspects of the plot. Sounds like a good director for
a Jurassic Park movie to me. The film also happens to costar Jake Johnson who
plays a supporting role in this weekend’s release. If you want to know what
kind of comedy he will bring to the table this is a perfect example of just
that.
Nick Robinson in The Kings of Summer:
The next two films will be introducing our two young leads
who play brothers taking a trip to the park. The older of the two, Nick
Robinson has a few big acting credits in his resume but I don't think any match
up to the wonderful coming of age story, The
Kings of Summer. Robinson plays the lead character, a teenager who's getting
ready for summer while living in an unstable home. He knows if he stays at home
all summer he will go crazy so he cooks up a crazy plan. He and his best friend
will find a random place in the woods, build a small cabin, and live there the
entire summer. If that sounds great to you then don't even read anymore, just
go watch the movie. The film boasts support from incredible talent like Nick
Offerman and Alison Brie and is just a well-made movie from start to finish.
Ty Simpkins in Iron Man 3:
I'm sure just about all of you have seen this movie already
but it was either this or Insidious
and I believe this to be a better representation of what we are going to see
out of him in Jurassic World. If you don't remember who he is in the movie, he
plays the young kid that Tony encounters when Jarvis sends him to the middle of
nowhere when his home is blown up. If you do remember him then you know he was
one of the most charming parts of this movie. The banter between him and Robert
Downey Jr. is priceless and I hope we get some of that snark this weekend. If
for some reason you haven't seen this yet then get moving on catching up with
the MCU
Bryce Dallas-Howard in 50/50:
For many genre fans the name Bryce Dallas-Howard may not be
a household one. The daughter of Ron Howard, she has appeared in a number of
fantastic films. My favorite performance of hers comes from 2011's 50/50, a little movie about a cancer
patient that hit me hard. The movie centers on a young guy who is diagnosed
with cancer, Dallas-Howard's character 'Rachael' is dating this guy. It is an
incredible story about the journey someone takes after being diagnosed with
Cancer and how it affects every facet of your life. Bryce's performance as the
hard ass girlfriend is inspiring and completely authentic. This one will most
certainly bring on the water works but I definitely recommend seeing it.
Vincent D'Onofrio in Full Metal Jacket:
Last but not at all least we have one of the more
recognizable names of the cast, Vincent D'Onofrio. If you want a recent look at
D'Onofrio I'd suggest checking out Marvel's
Daredevil on Netflix, he's a great Kingpin. Since we are talking about
movies though, there is no better performance from Vincent than as Private
'Pyle' in Stanley Kubrick's Vietnam masterpiece, Full Metal Jacket. Not only is this movie one of the most
incredible Vietnam War movies but it is also one of the best looks at the
psychological warfare of basic training. This is where we see D'Onofrio at
work. Private Pyle comes to boot camp as an eager young recruit and by the end
of his story has completely transformed into an unstable maniac. I am sure most
of you movie junkies have seen this but for those of you who haven't, watch it
as soon as possible. This movie is a testament to the power of film making and
D'Onofrio's performance is one of the greatest ever in a war movie. He will get
under your skin and literally scare the crap out of you. The scene with him in
the bathroom is forever burned into my memory. I really cannot wait to see what
he does in a Jurassic Park film.
As mentioned before, I have seen and without a doubt
recommend all of these movies to any of you. Jurassic World also stars the most recognizable movie star on the
planet right now (Chris Pratt) and was produced by maybe the greatest film
maker of all time (Steven Spielberg) but I'm sure you are all too familiar with
their works. The movie is in theaters everywhere this Friday, June 12 with
early showing Thursday evening. Keep an eye out for this week’s Flashback
Friday as well as my review of Jurassic World this weekend. As always you can
find me on twitter @ZachWWMovies, thanks for reading and smell ya later!
