Tucker and Dale vs Evil

Horror, Comedy

Directed By: Eli Craig

Last night I asked you guys on twitter to recommend any movie you want for me to watch and review. You guys chimed in with a whole variety of great films but there was one that really stood out to me, not only is it an incredible movie but it is also criminally unknown. That movie is the genius horror-comedy Tucker and Dale vs Evil.  Released back in 2010 and directed by Eli Craig (Zombieland), the film is the perfect blend of gore and comedy.

The plot is fairly simple and yet wonderfully clever. The stereotypical group of obnoxious, disrespectful college kids is heading out to the woods for a weekend of partying. These kids are the embodiment of every terrible, piece of crap teenager in every horror movie so when they see two "hillbillies" on their way to the cabin they automatically judge them as psychos. These two hillbillies happen to be our two main characters, Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine). Tucker has sunk every penny he has into a small "vacation home" and the two are heading up there to fix it up and do some fishing. A weekend in the forest can never be easy though, can it? These woods have a dark history and after a series of wacky misjudgments they find themselves in bloody conflict with the college kids.

The less you know about this film the better, the plot twists start early and only get better as the film moves forward. It's hard to decide if this movie functions better as a comedy or a horror movie, because it does both so well. Eli Craig found a way to blend the two into the perfect mix. The movie isn't just funny at some points and then horrific at other, it blends them into one. In a scene where you would typically cringe or scream he finds a way to put a smile on your face instead. It's an odd feeling to find yourself laughing hysterically as a dumb teenager sticks himself through the gut with a tree branch.

This is a truly one of a kind film and it all starts with the cast, because without these people this movie isn't possible. Tyler Labine (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Alan Tudyk (Serenity) are the definition of perfect casting in their roles. They are not only incredibly funny but the two strike amazing comedic chemistry. I am shocked I haven't seen them together in something since, which is simply criminal. Katrina Bowden (Nurse 3-D) stars alongside them as the “damsel in distress" and together the three make this movie into something special.

The film was a huge success critically, boasting an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it seems to be rather unknown to the average movie goer. Any and all horror fans need to see this film; I strongly believe it stands as one of the greatest horror-comedies we have ever seen. Tyler Labine is one of the funniest people around right now and he isn't in enough stuff. He shows just how funny he can be in this one as it will have you laughing out loud at one moment and hiding behind your pillow the next. Tucker and Dale vs Evil hits on every level, both horror and comedy, and is a testament to just how great the sub-genre can be. It’s hilarious, scary, a bit emotional, and definitely gory. It has been on Netflix instant streaming for the past few years so I doubt it's coming down anytime soon, check this movie out first chance you get.
